Conversations With Screen Composers: Murray Gold

The Royal Albert Hall and BAFTA have got together to present a very exciting event next month featuring the legend that is Doctor Who composer, Murray Gold. Full details below:
In this new series, major composers for film, television and video games join us in the Royal Albert Hall's Elgar Room. Using clips from their work, they’ll talk to broadcaster and promoter Tommy Pearson about the development of creative ideas in their music for the screen.

A composer for television, stage and film and a dramatist for both theatre and radio, Murray has been the composer of choice when it comes to scoring the most innovative programmes on television.

He's beloved for lush orchestral score that retain a strong melody and a sense of play. Gold has been BAFTA nominated four times for his television work on his ground-breaking score to Doctor Who, and also on Casanova, Queer as Folk and Vanity Fair.

In The Guardian’s 2010 feature 'The Top 10 TV dramas of all time' three series had scores from Murray, including Clocking Off and Channel 4's controversial drama series Shameless. Recent projects in theatre and radio include 2010's Rocket to the Moon at the National Theatre, and not content to rest on his music laurels Murray’s radio play Kafka the Musical won David Tennant a BBC Best Audio Drama award for his portrayal of Kafka.

Murray is to make his first convention appearance next week at Comic Con France 2012 - full details HERE.

BBC 50th Anniversary plans

With next year seeing a special anniversary for Doctor Who, much interest has been given over to exactly what the BBC plan to do in celebration of the world's greatest television show. Earlier today, market researchers GFK posted the following in its MediaView Appreciation Survey:
2013 will be the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. For all of the programmes listed below please say how likely you are to watch:
A one-off Doctor Who special on BBC One.

The making of the one-off Doctor Who special on BBC Three.

A documentary about the science of Doctor Who with Professor Brian Cox on BBC Four.

The Doctor Who Proms concert from the Royal Albert Hall featuring music from the series.
Very special thanks to ConstellationScorpio for this info.

Just to be clear, GFK wouldn't be asking this question unless prompted to do so. Mark Gatiss has also hinted that he is writing a "genesis of Doctor Who" type docu-drama for BBC Four, listen to his interview HERE. Here's Blogtor's list of 50 Things I'd Like To See in the 50th Anniversary!

UPDATE: Doctor Who Brand Manager Ed Russell (follow him on Twitter HERE) got in touch to say the proposed shows are "false".

BBC Books have announced the details and artwork for two new exciting Doctor Who releases in September, check out the details below and click on the pics for bigger versions.

The Dalek Project
by Justin Richards and Mike Collins
Published 6 September, £14.99

A stunning new graphic novel, featuring the Doctor as played by Matt Smith in an exciting adventure with the Daleks.

1917. It’s the height of the Great War and Hellcombe Hall is a house full of mystery: locked doors, forbidden rooms, dustsheets covering guilty secrets, and ghostly noises frightening the servants. Most mysterious of all, the drawing room seems to open directly onto a muddy, corpse-filled trench on the Western Front…

Arriving at this stately home, the Doctor meets Lord Hellcombe, an armaments manufacturer who has a new secret weapon he believes will win the war: he calls it ‘the Dalek’. Soon, the Doctor and his new friends are in a race against time to prevent the entire Western Front from becoming part of the Dalek Project!

A History of the Universe in 100 Objects
By Steve Tribe and James Goss
Published 27 September, £20

The history of the Doctor though 100 famous - and infamous - objects!

Every object tells a story. From ancient urns and medieval flasks to sonic screwdrivers and glass Daleks, these 100 objects tell the story of the entire universe, and the most important man in it: the Doctor.

Each item has a unique tale of its own, whether it’s a fob watch at the onset of the Great War or a carrot growing on the first human colony on Mars. Taken together, they tell of empires rising and falling, wars won and lost, and planets destroyed and reborn.

Within these pages lie hidden histories of Time Lords and Daleks, the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, the plot to steal the Mona Lisa and the story of Shakespeare’s lost play. You’ll find illustrated guides to invisible creatures, the secret origins of the internet, and how to speak Mechonoid.

A History of the Universe in 100 Objects is an indispensible guide to the most important items that have ever existed, or that are yet to exist.

REVIEW: The 11th Hour convention

If you’ve never been to a convention before (and I’ve only been to a few) then I can tell you there’s not much more fun to be had than hanging around fellow Who-lovers and chatting with stars of your favourite television series. It’s quite a sight to pop into the hotel bar and see Canton himself (actor Mark Sheppard) sharing a coffee with a group of fans, Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) comparing eye-patches with cosplayers and Alaya/Restac/Vastra (the beautiful Neve McIntosh) trying on an assortment of fezes and Stetsons (or fezton if you put them together). The 11th Hour had these kind of moments in abundance - and many more besides.

All weekend there was something fantastic going on. Be it autograph signing and photograph sessions or panels featuring the aforementioned stars along with cast of A Good Man Goes To War Christina Chong (Lorna Bucket), Dan Starkey (Commander Strax), Catrin Stewart (Jenny), Simon Fisher-Becker (Dorium Maldovar) and those from The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon Stuart Milligan (President Nixon) and William Morgan Sheppard (older Canton Delaware).

After the festivities of the opening night, featuring a meet and greet with the stars and some rambunctious Friday night dance floor behaviour from many, came the convention activities proper on Saturday morning. Hitting the stage first were writers James Swallow (author of the Tenth Doctor novel, The Peacemaker and many more Big Finish stories) and Tony Lee (the man behind the IDW comic series, The Forgotten and various other audios) along with popular blogger Cameron K McEwan (Blogtor Who) who helped moderate the proceedings.

Well, I say moderate. Tony and James love nothing more than a good old gab about Doctor Who, crossovers and other naughty things so any moderation was unnecessary. Their experiences in the lesser celebrated mediums of Who was a fascinating listen. The other panel I was involved in was an interview with Gary Russell (a man whose work in Who and its spin~offs is too large for this parenthesis). Gary, like my previous panelists, is not short on a story or five and was both engrossing and entertaining as he discussed his time as script editor on Who, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures (amongst many other projects). He is, of course, a fan too so it made for a good example for those budding writers in the audience that one day they could be working on the world’s greatest television show.

On the Saturday night, I had the pleasure of being on the judging panel for the Cosplay Competition along with Mark Sheppard, Frances Barber, Neve McIntosh, Catrin Stewart, Tony Lee, Stuart Milligan and Simon Fisher-Becker. And I can tell you that the panel were mightily impressed with the numerous amazing outfits; astounded at the originality of some and in awe of the time and dedication that must have gone into producing them.

The various panels over the two days were an absolute treat; the feeling of camaraderie and genuine warmth was apparent between the actors and actresses. Best of all was the chance for audience members to ask any questions they liked of the gang. And, having witnessed some odd questions, they were all more than happy to answer anything that came their way, however bizarre.

Without wanting to single out any guests over the two days, but I'm going to anyway, special mention must go to actresses Neve McIntosh and Frances Barber. Both women demonstrated their love for the show (new and old) and how honoured they feel to be a part of Doctor Who. Their respective careers, both impressive, make for informed opinions and aides their amusing storytelling skills.

I should also give a nod to the powerhouse that is Mark Sheppard - a man no stage or audience is big enough to contain. His energy and enthusiasm is electric, a true showman. Given that Canton has only appeared in one story, Sheppard already feels like a Who legend (like Barber and McIntosh). Conventions are second nature to him, and his love for his fans is extraordinary. Tip of the hat to the organisers for putting him on a panel with his dad, Morgan - a  very nice touch.

Of course, the highlight I think for everybody was Matt Smith - The Doctor for many attendees. Aside from the hundreds of photographs and autographs, Matt treated us to an interview followed by a Q & A session. During the former, event organiser Sean Harry managed to prise some juicy nuggets about the upcoming series and the Christmas Special. Best of all were the many questions from fans. Almost an hour was given up to the young and old who had a variety of queries for the Time Lord.

A gent, as ever, Matt answered them all with humility and warmth (even those who repeated questions from others). I will say if you've never seen the actor interact with kids then you are truly missing out. The term "totes adrobz" was made for the moment when you see Matt chat with a child - incredibly heartwarming. Smith is a phenomenal ambassador for the show and his enthusiasm for his public makes me glad to be a fan.

Hearty congratulations go to Starfury for such a smooth, professional and hitch~free convention that featured many memorable and magnifcent moments that I'm sure many people will be re~living for years to come. I thoroughly recommend attending their next Doctor Who event in November, Midnight featuring Billie Piper - details HERE.

Christopher Eccleston in Blackout

The BBC have released promotional pictures of Christopher Eccleston (who older readers may remember from Doctor Who in 2005) in a new BBC One drama, Blackout. The three part series airs from Monday, July 2 and features Eccleston as Daniel Demoys, a corrupt council official. Click on the pics for bigger versions and check out the synopsis below.

Daniel is a mess. He's drinking so much he's having blackouts. He has also been passing council contract details to businessman Henry Pulis. When a row between the pair gets out of hand, an alcohol-fuelled Daniel beats Pulis brutally, leaving him in a coma. Desperate for help, Daniel seeks out his sister Lucy, a lawyer.

Lucy is representing Nelson Venner, a young man speaking out against drug gangs. Lucy and Venner are giving a press statement when a car slows and a gun appears from the window. Daniel impulsively throws himself in front of Venner, taking the bullet.

When Daniel wakes in hospital, he is unaware his impulsive act is all over the news, and a nurse, Donna, explains he's being lauded as a hero. Daniel is lucky to have cheated death. It's a wake-up call. Maybe he has a chance to be a better man.

Elsewhere, Henry Pulis lies in intensive care. Daniel is wracked with guilt and desperate to pay for his sins. When political consultant Jerry Durrans visits Daniel to suggest he could be a viable candidate in the city's first mayoral election, Daniel is sceptical. Yet the seed of an idea has been planted and he has been set on the unlikely path to being elected his city's first political mayor. But Daniel remains a man with the blackest of secrets, desperate to make a stab at redemption.

Other cast members include: Dervla Kirwan (The Next Doctor), MyAnna Buring (The Impossible Planet) and Andrew Scott (Sherlock's Moriarty)

Blackout Ep1 airs Monday, 2 July on BBC One at 9pm
