I found it quite styless, miscast, dull and derivative. Much prefer the '64 film.

At least it's ambitious and was shown on the only TV channel worth catching. I don't get the silly remark about BBC4 being 'Only Connect' fans channel. Sounds mighty ignorant. The channel has re-shown 'The Avengers', 'The Great War', Alistair Cooke's America', 'Civilsation', 'The Boys from the Blackstuff', 'I, Claudius', 'The RKO Story', 'Curb Your Enthusiasm', 'Play for Today', ect, ect, And produced the finest SF documentary 'The Aliens and US', plus documentaries by leading experts on the atom. maths, chemistry, motorways, rain, wind, snow, physics, ect, ect. and all to beguiling effect - plus a slew of mesmerising docs on British TV. This is known as PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING. There are theme nights or seasons, foreign movies and it has also done original dramas too, far too numerous to mention, but some examples include 'Random Quest', a famous SF tale based on John Wyndham's short story and 'Home' based on J.G. Ballard's SF short 'The Enormous Space'.

Maybe, it's because someone at BBC4 actually has a memory of how good the Beeb used to be and they are trying to recreate echoes of the landmark SF anthology 'Out of the Unknown' and 1970s 'A Ghost Story for Christmas', which they revived for two installments before Gatiss' ambitious but dull effort of a couple of years ago. Could it not be that BBC4 commissioned this production from someone they already had a working relationship with, and that's why it's on that particular channel?
It is, after all, regarded as a thinking person's channel and has won "Best Channel of the Year" awards. I've never seen 'Only Connect', is it PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING, too?bobby J.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2272431515083873489.post-86296182611113738692010-10-26T18:49:36.619+01:002010-10-26T18:49:36.619+01:00The novel is a classic and most of the things you ...The novel is a classic and most of the things you found enjoyable, were not from Gatiss' script, but from the original work.

The photography was good, the effects more than fine, the score mundane and the acting seriously let it down. It came across waaaay too much like 'Wallace and Gromit' in space, trying to include nods to Melies and using the framing structure of the '60s film. I didn't like it then, to make it relevant, and cloyingly it didn't work here either.

I found it uninspired and was sorely missing Lionel Jefferies. I didn't think much of Gatiss' clodding three part Christmas ghost story from a couple of years back, either. Oh well.

At least it's ambitious and was shown on the only TV channel worth catching. I don't get the silly remark about BBC4 being 'Only Connect' fans channel. Sounds mighty ignorant. Even when things turn darker at the end, it felt like a great bit of family entertainment and deserves a festive slot on BBC One/Two in December.

Some of the shots of the aliens walking was slightly embarrassing, I felt, and looked like CGI from about ten years ago. But that's a minor niggle on what was a really enjoyable show.Billy Hicksnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2272431515083873489.post-56737925836503692332010-10-06T17:43:15.672+01:002010-10-06T17:43:15.672+01:00Yup, you're right. It took ages for anything to happen and there was a really annoyingly useless woman in it. A few months ago I got around to reading the book and I actually quite enjoyed it.The thought of being left behind on the moon at the mercy of alien creatures is terrifying to me.

Basically what I'm trying to say (in a roundabout way) is that I'm looking forward to this!Lillyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00884208964272893999noreply@blogger.com
